Application to become a Certificated Member
If you have successfully completed any one of the following educational requirements you may apply to Become a Certificated Member of CSA:

- successfully completed six (6) single subjects from the Graduate Diploma of Applied Corporate Governance or successfully completed five (5) single subjects of the Graduate Diploma in Company Secretarial Practice but do not hold permanent residency of Australia

Application to become an Associate
If you have successfully completed the education requirements for membership and you have at least six years' or periods totalling at least six years’ relevant experience* in one or more positions that are relevant to the area of governance, you may apply to become an Associate Member.
*The six-year qualifying period may be reduced by up to three years, where a person has:
- a degree from a university that the Council considers of suitable academic standing
- a diploma or other certificate that is nationally recognised as being equivalent to a degree from such a university
- a professional qualification that the Council recognises as justifying the reduction or
- completed any other professional development that the Council decides justifies a reduction. For more information, please see Becoming a Chartered Secretary.

Application to become a Fellow
You may apply to become a Fellow Member if you have successfully completed the education requirements for membership, and you have at least eight years', or periods totalling at least eight years', relevant experience**, and for three of the last ten years have been:
- a secretary or assistant secretary
- a senior executive or in an administrative position that, in the Council’s opinion, has at least the same status as a secretary or assistant secretary
- a senior academic in a university, or other higher or further education body
- a member in public practice
- or alternatively, must have completed any other professional development that the Council decides on.
**The eight-year qualifying period may be reduced by up to three years, where a person has:
- a degree from a university that the Council considers of suitable academic standing
- a diploma or other certificate that is nationally recognised as being equivalent to a degree from such a university
- a professional qualification that the Council recognises as justifying the reduction or
- completed any other professional development that the Council decides justifies a reduction.

Application for advancement to Fellow
You may apply to become a Fellow Member if you have been granted Associate standing with CSA and you have at least eight years', or periods totalling at least eight years’, relevant experience**, and for three of the last ten years, have been:
- a secretary or assistant secretary
- a senior executive or in an administrative position that, in the Council’s opinion, has at least the same status as a secretary or assistant secretary
- a senior academic in a university, or other higher or further education body
- a member in public practice
- or alternatively, must have completed any other professional development that the Council decides on.

Application for membership fee reduction (special consideration)
To be considered for a reduced rate of membership, you must be earning below $26,000 personal exertion income* within the current membership year (Jan-Dec). Reduced rates of membership are assessed on an individual, year-to-year basis. If you find that your situation has not altered for the preceding membership year, you will need to reapply to continue on the reduced rate of membership for the current year.
*Personal exertion income is income derived directly from the effort of a person, such as labour or skill.

Application for membership fee reduction (retired)
To be considered for a retired rate of membership, you must be fully retired from employment, not returning to gainful employment, and have a nil personal exertion income*.
*Personal exertion income is income derived directly from the effort of a person, such as labour or skill.

Application for re-election
If your membership lapsed within the last two years, you may apply for re-election to membership. However, referee and résumé documentation are not required.
If your membership lapsed more than two (2) years ago, you will need to complete the re-election form along with details of referees and a current up-to-date résumé.
Re-election after two (2) years of lapsed membership does not automatically grant you your previous category. Your application will be reassessed to ensure that you meet the criteria for your past category.

Request for transfer (out) of membership to another ICSA Division
By requesting a transfer of membership to another Division, you must relinquish membership with Chartered Secretaries Australia. The only transferable qualification is ACIS (Associate of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators) or FCIS (Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators). You may be charged a fee and/or required to complete a transfer exam by the other Division once your membership is transferred.

Request for transfer (in) of membership from another ICSA Division to CSA
In order for CSA to accept a transfer of membership, you must have permanent residency in Australia and be a current financial member of your current Division in good standing. To request a transfer of membership from another ICSA Division to CSA, please contact your current Division to request this transfer.
